The moment, one begins to think about the historical perspective of religion, he is going to understand that it is a belief or faith in one's religion, which influences the history of humankind. There have been many cases where people have sacrificed their lives rather than give up their religion. Religion is the main wellspring of natural human behaviour, and one can utilise it in two ways -either for the good or for the bad of mankind. The bad is when religion is used for forceful proselytizing, forcing people of ethnic minorities to convert to the state religion, and a purging people who do not belong to your own faith. One of the most horrifying examples of this is the systematic murder of 6 million Jews by the Nazis during the Second World War all in the name of religion. On the other hand, 1100 Jews were saved by Oscar Schindler, who himself was a Roman Catholic and a member of the Nazi party. Therefore, this should show that religion brings out the best and the worst in humanity.
History shows that religion has often been the reason for conflict between nations and peoples rather than a case for a peaceful and harmonious living. This is a matter of great irony, because every religion speaks about peace, brother hood and co-operation between humanity. That is why it is also very surprising to see religious leaders invoking blessings upon people going to war. If you look at the history of humankind, the major religions Islam and Christianity advocate peace. However, it did not stop Pope Urban to call for a holy war, against Jerusalem in the 11th century. Nowadays, people are looking for ways and means to use religion to promote peace. Nevertheless, as long as they are instigators around, religion is always going to be used as a means to create political and social mayhem.
