Double Bass
BEN GRIFFITHS
Born in 1979, Ben began his musical life as a chorister in the choir of King’s College, Cambridge.
Since 2012 he has been principal double bass of Aurora Orchestra, the trailblazing and award-winning ensemble which broke the mould in 2014 by performing Mozart's 40th Symphony at the BBC Proms entirely from memory. Since then they have gone on to perform twelve further symphonic works, all without sheet music, in the UK and abroad, to great critical acclaim.
In 2019 he gave the UK premiere of Missy Mazzoli's double bass concerto Dark with Excessive Bright with Aurora at King's Place, playing with 'muscular and candid musicianship' (Anna Picard, The Times).
As a freelancer, Ben works regularly with the LSO, and has appeared as guest principal with the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, Britten Sinfonia, and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
He has appeared on the soundtrack for hundreds of TV shows and films.
Ben plays on a fine double bass by George Lott, 1850.
